He told me it was taken in Malaysia. I do not know exactly when it was taken, why he was there, what he had been doing before this moment, or what happened after the shutter was pressed. The man in this photograph looks much younger than the father I have always known. Even the way he stands, with his hands on his hips and his eyes fixed on the camera, feels strangely unfamiliar to me. At the time, it was probably nothing more than an ordinary souvenir photograph. But as I grow closer to the age my father was when this picture was taken, I find myself looking at it differently. I also have ordinary days that I will eventually forget. And someday, the person I am today may become someone from the distant past in another person's memory. The photograph survived, but most of that day did not. The sound of his voice, the weather, the conversations, and whatever happened after this photograph was taken have mostly disappeared with time. So, in this single frame, something was both saved and lost. The image of my young father remains. But the young man he once was is gone.
