As someone who loves capturing lines, symmetry and geometry, this spot was on the top of my list of places to visit in the city. Project Kolkata serves women who are currently or formerly in the sex trade. Project Kolkata partners local NGOs to conduct health screenings and health education for these women and their children. Human trafficking remains a significant problem in India. West Bengal, where Kolkata is the capital and largest city of, ranks consistently at the top of states with the highest number of human trafficking incidents and resulting crime rates. Most of the victims are women and children, transported through the state’s borders of Nepal and Bangladesh, to be recruited into the sex trade. Many of the women who are actively in the sex trade came to our health screening wearing masks. As I explored the place, I started taking notice of this one elderly lady circling this large structure by herself as she recites her prayer and holds onto her incense. What drew me to this scene was how shooting through the plastic cover (used to shelter the place) helps blur the colours and detail of the structure behind her and silhouette the woman even more, which helps really translate the feeling of serene isolation I wanted to capture. What drew me to this scene in particular is how shooting through the plastic cover (made to shelter the place) helped blur the detail and mesh the colours of the structure, in addition to further silhouetting the woman who already looks so small in the frame, emphasizing on the sense of lone serenity that intrigued me about this moment. I was in the jungles of India and travelling in an open top jeep as usual. On a small bumpy road we saw a deer running and jumping across the road about 5 yards in front of us. We kept driving and suddenly we see that a Tiger was chasing the Deer and as our jeep reached that point - the Tiger was in his stride to jump across the road in an attempt to catch the deer. The Tiger stopped as soon as he saw our jeep in his path. If we were even half a second late - the TIger may not have been able to stop and likely would have leapt - probably landing in our jeep. He stopped in time - he sat and stared at us for a while and then walked away from the jeep. We waited in the area - and the Tiger also staye din the vicinity - sitting for a bit and then walking around.
