It's home to the Mosuo, an ethnic matriarchal tribe. The subject is a Mosuo boat rower enjoying a smoke while waiting for his next ride. Each boat ride is physically demanding, as the boats are hand-rowed and the total distance spans just over a kilometer. At that time, I had just gained access to a studio, and the model and I simply played with light, without a clear plan or expectations. It was an attempt to capture a mood rather than create a specific image. The result was a photograph that remains one of my favorites to this day. There is a sense of silence and depth in it, as if the gaze comes from another time. The light gently draws the face out of the darkness, leaving a feeling of both fragility and inner strength.
