fumo d’incenso e bastoncini di joss colorati in un tempio a George Town

George Town, Penang · 17 February 2026 Chinese New Year. My brother's birthday. A humid late morning in George Town. I had spent the morning wandering through the heritage streets in search of Penang's food culture, m oving between hawker stalls, temples and the extraordinary mixture of Southeast Asian influences th a t makes this city so distinctive. Around the temples, the air was heavy with incense. Large ceremonial joss sticks burned alongside smaller coloured ones, some carrying Chinese character s and auspicious words. Eventually, overwhelmed by the smoke, I went looking for somewhere quiet to sit and found myself try ing an espresso tonic for the first time. I wasn't convinced by the coffee. Which I nowadays absolutely love. I was, however, distracted by the plant beside my table. Sunlight had turned its leaves into shades of ochre, amber, green and brown, while the blue sky appe ared between them. Their colors seemed to fall across the white table below, creating something far more interesting to me than the coffee I had ordered. I lifted my phone and photographed it. A few hours later, around five in the afternoon, the heavens opened and I ran back to the hotel thro Ugh the rain. One of the days in George Town. Incense. Food. Coffee. Sunlight. Rain. And a photograph I didn't know I was going to take.
