When it bursts out of the water, it can reach speeds of 40–65 km/h, leaving only a split second to capture the moment. Photographing this instant is extremely challenging. As the bird emerges, water droplets scatter in every direction, often confusing the camera’s autofocus. In this case, the kingfisher was diving into a shaded pocket surrounded by branches, making it even harder for the camera to lock onto the subject instead of the busy background. Shot handheld at 800mm, every movement was magnified while tracking the bird’s unpredictable flight. Interestingly, the kingfisher was not hunting—it was simply diving repeatedly to take a quick shower. After three dives into the same spot, everything aligned for a brief fraction of a second. Here in urban Singapore, we have the 3rd largest species of deer in world (Sambar deer/Rusa unicolor). They occasionally venture out to areas near roads, to feed on vegetation that grows outside of the secondary forests. Unseen by many, these shy creatures prefer to avoid human encounters as they feed throughout the night. As responsible motorists/cyclists, we can all make an effort to observe a safe speed, while on roads flanking the central catchment area. I felt very isolated and I was dealing with a lot. During a night out I booked a solo trip to Berlin. I had never been on a plane or abroad on my own. My first night there was cold and I could not sleep so I decided to get my camera out and take some photos to pass the time. A car sped through a set of traffic lights and this is the image that was created. It gave me a sense of clarity within my life and the trip as a whole helped me move forward and moulded me. I look back on this image often when I am feeling rudderless or that I am not achieving personal goals.
