This photograph was taken at Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, USA, at around 6:30 in the evening during golden hour. In the distance, three people sat quietly on the vast salt flats. Before them stood a mountain range, with the sun slowly descending behind it. Seeing this scene, I instinctively raised my camera and pressed the shutter. What moved me in that moment was the quiet power of nature, its scale, its stillness, and its beauty. Standing there, I felt how small we are in comparison, and how many of the worries we carry in daily life fade when placed against something so immense. Compared to the world, to nature, or even to the universe, those concerns suddenly feel insignificant. | josecheang

Juliet in the garden, December 2025 By Leonie Freeman In December 2025 I travelled to Ibiza to photograph a project about the colourful native Ibizan lizard facing extinction due to invasive snakes coming to the island. This lizard is an ancient species and a much loved symbol of the island. In the last decade numbers are down 80%, since snake eggs have been finding their way to Ibiza hidden in the roots of imported olive trees from mainland Spain. The snakes have multiplied hugely in numbers and have been killing and eating the lizards, who have no defence against the snakes. People living on Ibiza are coming together to try and save the beloved lizard, by making snake traps and lizard sanctuaries where hopefully numbers can recover. I was collaborating with Joanna Hruby, of Theatre of the Ancients, a puppet maker and performance artist. Joanna was putting on a Christmas play about the lizard and snake problem, at Can Cristofol farm. The play was a version of Shakespeare’s Room & Juliet, ‘Un Amor Impossible’…. Or ‘an impossible love’ between two species who can not co-exist on the island. With children dressed in amazing hand make costumes, the feuding families of the original Shakespeare play were instead lizards and snakes. Juliet, played by Fallon, was Juliet and fell in love with Romeo, a snake. In this portrait we see Fallon as Juliet, photographed at sunset in the orange garden at Can Cristofol. She is gleaming in the golden hour sun and it feels like she is in the garden of Eden. Shot on Mamiya 645 Pro camera with 45mm Mamiya Sekor lens. Using Kodak Gold 200 film. | Leonie Freeman

Raeng Nóm Jai The Force That Draws the Heart I had already packed my bag when I noticed them. The light was sinking fast, turning the sky into a quiet fire. The game had been going on for hours — dust rising, shoes scraping against concrete, laughter mixing with competition. Nothing extraordinary, just boys playing before night took the court back. But something shifted. One of them held the ball differently. His body leaned forward, not to pass, not to hesitate — but to rise. I felt it before it happened. The frame formed in my mind: the jump, the defender’s reach, the sun suspended behind them like a witness. My battery was nearly dead. I did not have time to test, to adjust, to repeat. There would be no second attempt. No correction. Just instinct. I turned the camera on. For a fraction of a second, everything aligned — body, ball, light, horizon. They lifted into the air, and I pressed the shutter once. Then the camera died. The ball would fall. The players would land. The sun would disappear. The game would continue as if nothing monumental had occurred. But that single frame remained. Raeng Nóm Jai — the force that draws the heart — is not gravity as science explains it. It is the pull toward a moment before it fully reveals itself. It is the discipline to trust what you feel forming. The courage to act without certainty of outcome. I do not chase images. I wait until they begin to pull at me — until hesitation becomes heavier than risk. Like gravity, art draws the human heart toward what feels true. In that one unrepeated second, instinct outweighed fear. And that was enough. | John Hupa

I wait until they begin to pull at me — until hesitation becomes heavier than risk. Like gravity, art draws the human heart toward what feels true. In that one unrepeated second, instinct outweighed fear. And that was enough. | John Hupa
