As an international student, I exist within a carefully constructed fiction: the "well-being" I report to my family back home. This series documents the cost of that silence. Through my lens, the abstract weight of anxiety, depression, and frustration is given form. These images serve as a visual bridge between my hidden reality and the outside world—a language for the unspeakable. By revealing the fractured soul behind the facade, I invite the viewer to find their own echoes in my silence.
I was initially drawn to the visual harmony in the background: a woman in black-and-white walking her dog, their outfits matching with a deliberate aesthetic and symmetry. But the street has a way of interrupting. In the foreground, an auto-rickshaw driver had dropped his pants, re-tucking his shirt. A gesture of professional pride performed with total indifference to the public eye. While one half of the street is conscious of how they are seen, the other is simply existing in the thick of a long workday. It also got me questioning that "decency" is often a matter of perspective; for the driver, he wasn't exposing himself, he was simply preparing for his next fare. | Shikhar Bafna

I love movies more than I love photography, so when I'm taking photos I gravitate towards scenes I've recently watched on screen that have stuck with me. In a way it makes me feel like I am creating my own little movie frame starting from a memory of a scene, with the two ending up intertwining and forming a new "false" memory. Looking at the stern composition and subject of this image, not to mention that it's in black and white, I am fairly certain I was watching a lot of Fellini and Antonioni's classics at the time I took this image.
This photograph captures a quiet moment of solitude beneath a tree. A young boy sits absorbed in his own world, momentarily separated from the noise and movement of everyday life around him. The scene reflects the small spaces of stillness that exist even within busy environments. Using black and white allows the image to focus on mood, light, and emotion rather than colour. The contrast between shadow and light highlights the boy’s concentration while the surrounding darkness frames the moment, creating a sense of calm and introspection. Through this work, I aim to show how simple, ordinary moments can carry quiet depth. The photograph invites viewers to pause and reflect on the unnoticed moments of stillness that often exist in our everyday lives. | Akshob Ram Kumar

This photograph marks the first friendship I made on my first trip to Japan. This is Ujiie Yoshihiro, owner of Black Sun Jazz Club in Kabukicho, Shinjuku. On my first evening in Shinjuku, I stumbled into his bar by chance. From our very first interaction, it became my local—somewhere I returned to every day. I took his portrait that first night, and it meant so much to him that when I returned to Japan, I made a second portrait. This image will always remind me of the warmth and kindness I experienced in a place I knew nothing about, completely on my own. I always admired Hiro’s pride in his work and the camaraderie he created around him. Hiro, as he likes to be called, welcomed me in on my first night and unknowingly gave me a place to belong. His warmth and kindness, turned a chance encounter into a lasting reason to return. | Kareem Berjaoui

The image explores the contrast between stillness and the larger world around him, highlighting how simple moments can carry deep meaning. The photograph was created using natural light to emphasise the mood and intimacy of the scene. By using black and white, the focus shifts from colour to emotion, allowing the viewer to reflect on the subject’s quiet concentration and the calm atmosphere of the setting. Through this work, I aim to present an honest and timeless moment of everyday life. It invites viewers to pause and reflect on the quiet spaces that exist within our busy world. | Akshob Ram Kumar

This photograph captures a quiet moment of solitude. A young boy sits beneath a tree, absorbed in his own small world while the surrounding environment fades into shadow.
