It was early morning when this 6–8-week-old lion cub wanted to leave the bush to play with its sibling. Each time they wandered too far, their mother would lift her head and call them back. The cycle repeated multiple times, testing boundaries and her patience. This moment was captured when one cub refused to listen. Instead of calling again, the mother walked over and lifted her cub, carrying it back to safety. These lizards are the much loved symbol of Ibiza and an ancient species, numbers have decreased by 80% over the last decade. Snakes are eating the lizards and the lizards have no defence. I worked with Joanna Hruby of Theatre of The Ancients, shooting a play performed by local kids at Can Cristofol farm. The play was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, but with snakes and lizards as the two rival families. 'Un Amor Impossible' was the title, an 'impossible love' between 2 species who can not co-exist on Ibiza. This portrait is of Juliet, played by Fallon, photographed at sunset before the show. This vertical poster, "Is this a Phoenix?", is a symmetrical re-imagining of that first midnight of 2026. By mirroring the vibrant rainbow fireworks and stacking the architectural icons of Singapore, a mythical silhouette emerged from the data. To some, it is the 'Sovereign Butterfly'—a regal symbol of grace and the quiet metamorphosis into a new and beautiful life. To others, it is a Phoenix rising, fueled by the explosive energy of the city’s celebration. I chose this title to invite the community to engage with the 'soul' of the image. Whether you see the delicate wings of a butterfly or the fiery ascent of a phoenix, the essence remains the same: a powerful, vertical rise into a new chapter.
