Dancing Light Above the Wrath of Mother Nature Taken on 28th August 2024. KP5 aurora borealis shining above Sundhnúksgígar volcanic eruption, Iceland. For the past 800 years, the Fagradalsfjall volcanic region remained dormant. That was until March 19, 2021, when the region reawakened. Since then, eruptions have been happening unpredictably, lasting anywhere from a couple hours to a few months. Just before our visit to Iceland in 2024, we were notified that seismic activity was increasing and an eruption was imminent. We kept monitoring the situation during our 12-day trip, and on our 9th day, the eruption officially began. However as exciting as it was, we couldn't reach the area due to heavy toxic smoke. We were devastated, knowing we only had a few days left in the country. Every day we constantly checked the wind directions, air quality, live feeds, and official news, hoping the conditions would stabilize so we could visit safely. Then came our last day. Less than 12 hours before our flight, the pollution dropped slightly and wind direction changed, so we managed to get into the area with a safer condition. After days of cloudy and rainy weather, as we were photographing the volcano from a distance, the sky suddenly opened up—revealing one of the best night shows of our trip right on top of the eruption. A Kp5 Northern Lights danced above the fire. The scene was otherworldly, haunting, but deeply mesmerizing. There was an eerie presence to it all, as if the moment was completely detached from reality. With so many rare events overlapping, this photograph statistically had less than a 0.0001% chance of happening. It made the capture truly unique. Being 9,700 km away from home, witnessing the raw and powerful wrath of mother nature alongside such ethereal beauty was a profound, once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish forever.
