But his posture made the waiting visible. The way he leaned forward, the phone held in both hands, and the quiet concentration on the small screen made the rest of the space seem almost unimportant. Sometimes waiting does not look dramatic. It is simply checking the same screen one more time, hoping that something has changed since the last time. Perhaps nothing happened. Moored at the harbor, it no longer felt like a machine in motion, but something heavy and worn, finally allowed to rest. That was what I wanted to hold onto in this photograph. In black and white, the vessel loses the distraction of color and becomes almost entirely weight, surface, and shape. The dark hull, the ropes pulled tight, and the still water beside it all seem to carry the fatigue of a long day’s work. Across the water, the city remains lit and distant. But here, in the foreground, the ship feels quieter and older, as if the labor of the day still lingers in its body. Perhaps that is why the black and white version felt right to me. It does not show the ship at its most vivid. It shows it at its most exhausted. The ship is still heavy, worn, and marked by work, but in color it no longer feels only tired. It feels settled. The light from the harbor touches the water and spreads around the vessel, turning an ordinary working boat into something briefly gentle. Perhaps that is what made me photograph it again. Because of that, the figure does not seem to be simply walking through a park.
