Subject : Waiting for the Call Camera : Sony α57 Lens : Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Digital He kept looking at his phone. Not scrolling quickly. Not typing much. Just checking it again and again, as if waiting for something to appear. A message. A name. A call. I did not know what he was waiting for. But his posture made the waiting visible. The way he leaned forward, the phone held in both hands, and the quiet concentration on the small screen made the rest of the space seem almost unimportant. Sometimes waiting does not look dramatic. It is simply checking the same screen one more time, hoping that something has changed since the last time. Perhaps nothing happened. Perhaps the call eventually came. I only photographed the part in between. Waiting for the call. #sonyalpha57 #sigma2470 #sigma2470f28 #digitalphotography #blackandwhitephotography #streetphotography #documentaryphotography #everydaylife #waiting #quietmoments #peopleinspace #urbanphotography #visualdiary #streetlife #korea | 김상원

Subject : Nothing Biting Camera : Sony α57 Lens : Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Digital Sometimes, a photograph says more through a person’s back than through their face. A fisherman sits quietly by the water, his rod resting beside him. There is no excitement in the scene. No movement toward the line. No sign of a catch. Only the long pause that comes after waiting for something that never happened. That was what made me stop. From behind, I could not see his expression. But somehow, his posture seemed enough. The lowered shoulders, the stillness, and the empty space around him made the whole day feel slightly unsuccessful. Perhaps he had caught nothing. Perhaps he was simply tired. Either way, the photograph felt like the end of a day that had not gone as hoped. Not every day gives us something to take home. Sometimes, all that remains is the waiting. Nothing biting. #sonyalpha57 #sigma2470 #sigma2470f28 #digitalphotography #blackandwhitephotography #fisherman #fishinglife #streetphotography #documentaryphotography #everydaylife #quietmoments #harborlife #peopleinspace #visualdiary #korea | 김상원

Subject : After the Work is Done Camera : Sony α57 Lens : Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Digital By the end of the day, the ship seemed tired. Moored at the harbor, it no longer felt like a machine in motion, but something heavy and worn, finally allowed to rest. That was what I wanted to hold onto in this photograph. In black and white, the vessel loses the distraction of color and becomes almost entirely weight, surface, and shape. The dark hull, the ropes pulled tight, and the still water beside it all seem to carry the fatigue of a long day’s work. Across the water, the city remains lit and distant. But here, in the foreground, the ship feels quieter and older, as if the labor of the day still lingers in its body. Perhaps that is why the black and white version felt right to me. It does not show the ship at its most vivid. It shows it at its most exhausted. After the work is done. #sonyalpha57 #sigma2470 #sigma2470f28 #digitalphotography #blackandwhitephotography #shipphotography #harbor #maritime #workingvessel #documentaryphotography #industrialphotography #portcity #visualdiary #korea #monochrome | 김상원

Subject : Order Against the Sea Camera : Nikon D850 Lens : AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR Digital The sea never stays in order. Its surface changes from one moment to the next, shaped by wind, current, and waves without any need for symmetry. Beside it, everything built by people seems to follow a different rule. Tetrapods repeat along the shore. Bridge columns stand at measured intervals. Lines continue across the water with almost mechanical precision. That contrast was what made me stop. Nature moves without asking to be organized, while we continue building structures meant to resist, contain, and cross it. In black and white, the difference felt even clearer. The sea becomes texture and movement. The structures become lines, repetition, and order. Neither one truly defeats the other. They simply remain beside each other — one constantly changing, the other trying not to. Order against the sea. #nikond850 #nikkor28300 #digitalphotography #blackandwhitephotography #seascape #bridgephotography #tetrapod #geometry #orderandchaos #minimalphotography #urbanlandscape #coastline #documentaryphotography #visualdiary #korea | 김상원

Subject : Where the Ship Breathes Camera : Kodak S100EF Lens : Kodak 35mm F4.5 Film : Fomapan 200 Deep inside the ship, another world continues to work. Pipes, steel, heat, oil, and machinery fill the engine room. To someone seeing it for the first time, it may look complicated and unfamiliar. But for those who work here, every sound means something. A change in vibration, a different temperature, or even a slightly unfamiliar noise can be enough to make someone stop and listen. Above us, the ship carries people and cargo across the sea. Down here, there is no horizon. Only machinery, narrow passages, and the constant rhythm of an engine doing the same work hour after hour. Most people will never see this part of a ship. Sometimes, it is simply waiting. A quiet platform, a train that has not arrived yet, and a few people standing in their own small worlds. One checks the track ahead. Another seems lost in thought. Nothing connects them except the same place and the same few minutes. Soon, the doors will open. They will step inside, disappear into different seats, and continue toward different destinations. Even when everything is running normally, someone is always walking through it. Checking temperatures. Listening for unfamiliar sounds. Looking for leaks, vibrations, or anything that feels slightly different from before. Most of the time, nothing is wrong. And perhaps that is the point. A ship keeps moving because someone continues to walk these same passages, looking at the same machines, hour after hour and day after day. To an outsider, the engine room may seem like a maze of pipes, valves, and machinery. But after enough time, every corner becomes familiar. Morning light pours into the narrow alley, washing out the distance and leaving the buildings on both sides in shadow. A cart waits by the roadside. Someone stands near the corner. And for a brief moment, another person crosses through the light. Nothing in the scene seems important on its own. It is simply another street, another morning, and people moving through their ordinary routines. But light can change a familiar place. For a few seconds, the alley becomes something different — quieter, softer, almost separated from the city around it. Then the person reaches the other side. And the street becomes ordinary again. After a watch or a day's work is over, there are still hours left before the next day begins. Sometimes those hours are spent talking. Sometimes sleeping. And sometimes, singing alone in a small karaoke room somewhere at sea. The chairs are empty, but the song continues. On land, karaoke is usually something shared with friends. On a ship, it can become something else — a way to fill the silence, to make an ordinary evening pass a little faster, or simply to hear something other than the constant sounds of the vessel. Nothing special happened that night. A man chose a song, picked up the microphone, and stayed for a while. Perhaps that is what life at sea is often made of. Not only voyages, ports, engines, and machinery, but small ways of passing the time between one day and the next.
