I was in the jungles of India and travelling in an open top jeep as usual. On a small bumpy road we saw a deer running and jumping across the road about 5 yards in front of us. We kept driving and suddenly we see that a Tiger was chasing the Deer and as our jeep reached that point - the Tiger was in his stride to jump across the road in an attempt to catch the deer. The Tiger stopped as soon as he saw our jeep in his path. If we were even half a second late - the TIger may not have been able to stop and likely would have leapt - probably landing in our jeep. He stopped in time - he sat and stared at us for a while and then walked away from the jeep. We waited in the area - and the Tiger also staye din the vicinity - sitting for a bit and then walking around. It means a lot to me, especially now, because this marks my 20th year practicing photography, both as a job and as something I genuinely love. Looking back, this image feels like a reminder of how far I’ve come. Everything was so pure back then, still a little naive. Money mattered, sure, but it was never the source of happiness. I just wanted to shoot. If I didn’t have the budget for models or fancy props, I’d make do with whatever was around in the studio I was working at. Maybe this image didn’t fully make sense to me at that point in time but it does now. That’s what makes it even more meaningful. The bat hovered briefly, sniffing the sweet aroma, then settled upside-down beneath a perfect fig. With surprising delicacy, it tore into the soft fruit, savoring each bite. Juice glistened on its fur as seeds scattered to the ground—future fig trees planted by accident . But the street has a way of interrupting. In the foreground, an auto-rickshaw driver had dropped his pants, re-tucking his shirt. A gesture of professional pride performed with total indifference to the public eye. While one half of the street is conscious of how they are seen, the other is simply existing in the thick of a long workday. Her stories about previous generations of people who lived on our road were fascinating - the lady who lived in the house before her said that, during the war, a bomb dropped in our garden! Sarah used to be part of the Portobello arts scene in the 60's, so understands creative expression. When I suggested a photoshoot she was very much up for it. She was the matriarch of the family of all our families on our road.
