札幌農学校の初代教頭としてアメリカから赴任していたクラーク博士が日本を去るときに学生たちに残した言葉。 このフレーズだけが有名だが、実際は、“Boys, be ambitious like this old man”- 「この老人のように」と自分のことを指してアメリカ帰国の際に馬上から学生たちにと言ったとされ、それは「さよなら」の挨拶の代わりとなるようなものだったとも。 諸説あるが、クラーク博士は札幌農学校の学生らに対し、「紳士たれ」というもうひとつの名言をも残していた。 ずっと住んでいるのにおそらく初めてここに来たきがする。 あまり振り返ることもない遠い昔の母校にまつわるエピソードだが、春休みなのか日本各地から沢山の若い学生とおぼしき人たちが観光に来ていた。 大志ではなくとも成し遂げたいことは改めて徹底的に取り組みたいと若者のように心新たに思った。 The name comes from Hapilan, meaning dump site, a reminder of the harsh environment the community lives in. I was invited by a friend who runs a shelter for boys in the area. During my time there, I met children and families living in extreme poverty, many relying on scavenging at nearby dump sites to survive. Yet what stayed with me was not just the hardship, but the warmth of the people. I was welcomed openly, with laughter, curiosity, and generosity that felt deeply sincere. As a photographer, I struggled with how to tell this story. Rather than focusing only on deprivation, I chose to document moments of hope — the smiles, friendships, and quiet resilience of everyday life. The children spoke freely about their dreams of becoming nurses, engineers, and software developers, believing strongly in a future beyond their present circumstances. He must intriguing who I was. Barely seen asian in middle of Kenya, and who has a machine gun type camera in his hand and walking with bunch of group of white people. I must be so strange to his eye. He must want to know more about me. He kept fallow me until I finally stop by one of host. I was looking around and here he is. I finally have eye contacted with him, and my finger couldn't resist not to do. My finger start to push shutter and got his eye. The eyes with curious and wondering. To me, he is just one of the kids I have met in Kenya, but to him, I became one of his memorable guy in his life. I hope I can remember this moment very long time....
