This photograph captures a moment from Kandanar Kelan Theyyam, a ritual performance practiced in the northern region of Kerala, India. More than a performance, Theyyam is a living tradition where mythology, devotion, and community come together. Through elaborate costumes, ritual movement, and acts involving fire, the performer embodies a divine presence, blurring the line between human and deity. Made in the midst of intense heat, smoke, and a tightly packed crowd, this image was created from within the ritual rather than from a distance. The challenge was not only technical but physical—finding space, enduring the heat, and remaining present as sparks and burning embers flew through the air. I chose to exhibit this work because many of India's cultural traditions remain largely unseen outside their local communities. As a photographer, I feel a responsibility to document and share these living histories. This image is an invitation to witness a tradition that continues to thrive through collective memory, faith, and generations of practice, illuminated here by the glow of fire.
