This photograph is part of Visual Recognition, a series of 44 images made during my travels in Japan. As a portrait photographer travelling without another human subject, I shifted my attention towards the environment, searching for traces of presence within architecture, light, and everyday spaces. Using negative colour, familiar forms are transformed into something unfamiliar, encouraging a different way of seeing. Through this process, the image becomes a portrait without a person—where colour, shape, and atmosphere act as substitutes for the human figure, exploring memory, recognition, and the emotional connection between photographer and place.
