Want to start bird photography but unsure about which equipment to choose or where to shoot? Many might feel the same way.

This time, we introduce the basics of bird photography that you can start easily. You'll learn about the types of cameras needed, shooting techniques, and how to choose the best spots, allowing you to start practicing right away!

Choosing Cameras and Lenses

For bird photography, two main types of cameras are used: "interchangeable lens cameras" and "compact digital cameras".

"Interchangeable lens cameras" allow you to change lenses and freely alter your shooting style, making them ideal for capturing birds from a distance. Especially, telephoto lenses (250mm or more) are recommended for capturing even small birds clearly.

On the other hand, with "compact digital cameras," you can also easily capture distant birds by choosing models with high magnification zoom lenses.

Handy Accessories to Have

Besides cameras and lenses, tripods and monopods are also important. They prevent camera shake and help you take clearer photos.

Also, don't forget to bring sunscreen and insect repellent for summer shoots, and warm clothing for winter. Additionally, having a raincoat and waterproof shoes ready for rainy days will give you peace of mind. Birds show different appearances depending on the season and weather, so enjoy them with proper gear.

Finding Shooting Spots and Etiquette

Initially, it's good to target birds kept in zoos or parks, or birds that are not afraid of people (like ducks and pigeons). Once you get used to it, refer to a bird guidebook and try visiting natural bird photography spots.

However, etiquette is also important when photographing birds. Be mindful not to chase birds around or approach nests, and consider the birds and other photographers.

A recommended spot for beginners is the "Kyoto Prefectural Botanical Garden." It's Japan's first public botanical garden, known for its vast grounds and diverse vegetation. It's also famous as a sanctuary for bird photography, where you can observe many birds such as Daurian redstarts, great tits, bulbuls, kingfishers, and long-tailed tits, offering plenty of shooting opportunities.

Currently, a photo contest themed "Memories in Kyoto Prefectural Botanical Garden" is being held, so be sure to participate!
