Confusion with Instagram's 'Made with AI' Label

Recently, more photos posted on are being labeled as 'Made with AI'. However, this label is sometimes applied to photos that haven't used AI, causing confusion among creators. Why is this happening?

Why Are Labels Being Applied?

Differences with Other Tools

Interestingly, while using the 'Generative Fill' tool results in an AI label, other tools like 'Spot Healing Brush', 'Content-Aware Fill', and 'Clone Stamp' do not. These tools are also used for photo editing, but does not recognize them as AI.

How to Avoid the Label

There are ways to avoid the AI label while using the 'Generative Fill' tool. One method is to reload the edited image in , paste it onto a black background, and then save it. This process makes not recognize the image as AI-created.

Meta has not disclosed the mechanism for detecting AI. However, they state that AI detection is based on 'AI image signals shared across the industry or when users self-report uploading AI content'.
