A New Standard in Trustworthiness: What is C2PA?

Fujifilm has announced its participation in the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), following Canon, Nikon, Leica, and Sony, by introducing C2PA support in its X and GFX series cameras.

CAI is an open technical standard organization established by Adobe, aimed at developing open technical standards to verify the provenance and history of digital content, especially photographs. Recently, it has expanded its scope to include the identification of AI-generated content.

CAI promotes the adoption of open industry standards for content credentials within a global community of media and technology companies, including camera manufacturers.

Why Fujifilm Joins C2PA

During the announcement of the 'GFX 100S II', Fujifilm revealed its participation in the Content Authenticity Initiative and the introduction of authentication features in interchangeable lens cameras.

'In recent years, proving the reliability of online content such as photos and videos has become an important global goal. To further this effort and ensure creative and business activities continue to thrive, Fujifilm has joined C2PA and CAI,' the company stated.

Furthermore, 'Fujifilm aims to support the development of systems that provide valuable information such as provenance and records to digital files through collaboration with C2PA and CAI. Ultimately, we aim to apply this authentication solution to the GFX and X series lineup,' they added.

Implementation Strategy Through Firmware Updates

Fujifilm announced that it would roll out C2PA support through firmware updates as needed, although the timing of these updates has not yet been determined.

Fujifilm adopts a strategy of updating existing cameras via firmware, similar to Sony. Meanwhile, Leica is releasing standalone cameras supporting C2PA through hardware.

According to CAI, both methods are effective, with no particular superiority. Firmware updates have the advantage of updating existing cameras with the latest technology, while hardware methods allow for quicker market introduction. Currently, very few cameras have C2PA support, but many camera manufacturers have promised to add this in the future.

It is expected that C2PA support will be introduced across the camera industry, proving the provenance of photos and videos and preventing the spread of misinformation. This will enhance the reliability of digital content and establish rules that allow for safe and focused creativity.
