photo poster project | Connected by the Warmth of Photography, by 舒 | ISSUE #269

photo poster project is held by cizucu in cities around the world. Simply by submitting photographs to cizucu, creators can take part in a photography poster exhibition and connect with fellow photographers they have yet to meet.

In this edition, we hear from 舒, one of the creators who participated in photo poster project.

Please introduce yourself!

Hello, I’m 舒, a freelance photographer based in Taipei.
My work primarily encompasses fashion portraiture, food photography, interdisciplinary styling projects, brand campaigns, promotional portraits for music artists, and fashion show documentation. I engage with photographic expression across a broad range of fields.

I love photography, and I love film. Much of my work is created using 135 and 120-format film cameras. For me, photography is a way of engaging honestly with the world.

What inspired you to participate?

I decided to participate after being invited to exhibit. When I saw my work printed as an A2 poster and installed in the exhibition space, it felt as though an image that had existed on a screen had entered the physical world and acquired a palpable warmth of its own.

Although I had previously exhibited in New York, this was the first time I had shown my work in Taiwan. That made the opportunity an especially rare, meaningful, and beautiful experience for me.

What was the experience of participating like?

Once the work left the screen, assumed a physical form, and was installed in the exhibition space, I felt that the moments distilled at the time of shooting had finally been given a place of their own.

At the exhibition, many visitors took the time to look closely at each creator’s poster and shared thoughtful, sincere responses.

By the end, visitors had also taken every postcard I had prepared. Knowing that my images had truly been seen and received was tremendously encouraging and strengthened my resolve to continue making photographs.

I was also struck by the creator cards prepared for each participant. It may seem like a small gesture, but it was a thoughtful detail that made the experience of participating as an exhibiting creator all the more rewarding.

Creators from a wide range of disciplines gathered in the exhibition space, and we had time to exchange ideas and experiences. Through those encounters, I felt my imagination of what the world could be expand a little further.

Why did you select this particular work?

The work I selected carries a sense of time distilled within stillness.

The Work Featured in This Exhibition

I have always been drawn to vast natural landscapes imbued with a profound sense of emptiness and stillness. Even without taking a photograph, I am captivated by spaces and scenes where time itself seems to have stopped.
Even so, I distance myself from that state for just a moment and release the shutter, because my future self may one day forget it.
I believe the camera is a means of encountering another reality.

For those considering photo poster project

photo poster project is an exhibition filled with warmth. The work is curated, printed as a poster, installed in an exhibition space, and brought into dialogue with visitors. Through this sequence of experiences, the many photographs made in everyday life cease to exist solely within a screen.

Regardless of the equipment you use or the title you hold, each perspective and composition becomes a poster through which you can enter into dialogue with yourself once again, while opening new ways of thinking and seeing between you and the audience.

I make photographs because I want to see what things become after they have been photographed. Printing an image as a poster evokes a similar sensation.
I am certain the experience will mark the beginning of a new journey.
