‘negative space’
In photography, it’s not only what’s depicted that makes the subject stand out.
There is the intentionally left space, the silence, the pause.
Because of this negative space, the viewer’s gaze is drawn to a single point, and emotions slowly emerge.
A solitary shadow floating in the vast sky, the tension created by a white wall, a moment when darkness sharpens contours.
It may seem empty, yet there is undeniably “something” inhabiting that space.
What kind of negative space have you captured?
Show us that one frame where the void begins to speak.

On a canvas divided in two by a jet-black water surface and a pure white snowy field, a lone swan floats quietly. The footprints left in the snow gently speak of life that once was. The darkness as negative space accentuates the swan’s presence, while the light as negative space brings forth the memory of the footprints. This rare work resonates with two types of negative space in harmony.

Wavy glass partitions rhythmically segment the figure of a traveler. The vast negative space of the floor draws the gaze downward, while the blue suitcase glimpsed through the partition’s gap becomes a vivid accent, perfectly expressing the suspended sense of time during a journey. The structure, intentionally creating “invisible parts,” functions as a device for negative space—an outstanding feature of this work.

Between a black volcanic landscape and a vast blue sky, a white bus stands alone. The negative space of the sky, occupying most of the frame, further highlights the smallness of life on the ground, evoking both grandeur and solitude. Even the snow-capped mountains recede into the background, so overwhelming is the presence of the sky. The contrast in scale maximizes the power of negative space in this refreshing work.

Against a softly graded sky, the silhouette of a single streetlight stands dignified. The amount of negative space directly embodies the protagonist’s solitude, spreading a quiet emptiness in the viewer’s heart. Upon closer look, a small bird perches atop the lamp, a subtle discovery that reveals life dwelling within the void. This is a resolute work, embodying the aesthetics of subtraction.

On a beach where fog has painted everything white, decayed posts and a human figure emerge faintly. The boundaries between sky, sea, and sand dissolve, turning the entire frame into a vast negative space. It’s not that “there is nothing,” but rather a sense that “everything returns to the void.” The interval created by the fog gently blurs the contours of existence, resulting in a poetic work.

Against a hazy urban sky, three children huddle together atop a concrete wall. The vast negative space of the dull gray sky accentuates the warmth of their yellow jackets. The contrast between the city’s inorganic nature and human warmth draws the viewer’s gaze back to the frame, wondering what lies beyond the wall.

Amidst a screen filled with spiraling white curves, two figures quietly huddle in the lower left corner. The overwhelming scale of the architecture functions as negative space, highlighting the smallness of human presence like a line of poetry. In this monochrome world, their outlines stand out distinctly, and the vastness of white seems to condense affection within it.

Set against a deep green forest, a figure holding a white parasol is tucked into the lower right. The darkness of the dense trees functions as negative space, beautifully highlighting the white umbrella and clothing. The shadows of leaves falling on the parasol suggest a dialogue with nature, and rather than being “protected,” there is a quiet tension as if being “swallowed by the forest.” The interplay of light and shadow quietly speaks to the smallness of humanity.

Rays of light pierce a vast monochrome sky, with the silhouette of a lone girl standing beneath. The gradation of overlapping mountains forms a deep negative space, making the girl’s presence even more solitary. The composition, where light pours into the immense negative space of the sky, evokes the feeling that the world was created for that single figure. Negative space becomes a stage for blessing in this powerful work.

Within the vast negative space of a grimy wall, a surveillance camera and its shadow exist quietly. The “observer” becomes the “observed” through negative space—a fascinating reversal. The shadow asserts itself even more eloquently than the camera itself, and the “trace of absence” speaks more powerfully than the “substance.” This work incisively captures the essence of negative space.

In a space shrouded in darkness, a white wall glows in the distance as a lone silhouette passes in front. The rectangle of light itself functions as negative space, further highlighting the smallness and solitude of the figure. The number “5” is quietly inscribed in the space, and the sense of being in transit to an unknown destination gently stirs the viewer’s imagination.

Birds line up along the edge of a curved roof, while one takes flight into the vast white sky. The contrast between the group and solitude, stillness and motion, unfolds on the stage of the expansive sky. The bird flying into the void heads toward nothingness, and that “nothingness” shines powerfully as a symbol of freedom. Negative space here embodies pure possibility in this radiant work.

In a frame dominated by pitch-black darkness, only the glass entrance of a building glows faintly in the distance. The silhouettes of an adult and child can just be seen within that small light. The overwhelming mass of darkness as negative space makes the presence of light and people all the more precious, evoking a quiet emotion that wells up the more you gaze at it.

Against the vast negative space of a cloudy sky, two silhouettes quietly huddle on a rooftop, with the hem of a dress fluttering in the wind. Thin power lines horizontally divide the space, beneath which the world of the two quietly breathes. The expanse of negative space seems to reflect the richness of their emotions, capturing a beautiful moment that needs no words and is complete simply by their presence.

With a deep, clear cobalt blue sky as the backdrop, the top of a jade-green glass building peeks into the frame. The negative space of the sky resonates with the building’s color, mutually enhancing each other. The asymmetrical division created by the building’s upper edge gives rise to negative space on the right, suggesting that even within the city, there are “places to breathe.” The interplay of color and form is elegantly composed.

A pine tree extends its branches boldly from the left, spreading toward the blue sky and cumulus clouds. The composition, showing only branches and leaves without roots or trunk, is daring and evokes a sensibility reminiscent of Japanese painting in its use of negative space. The clouds spread below, the clear sky remains above, and the pine branches seem to swim along that boundary—this beautiful coincidence is the highlight of the work.

The generously allotted negative space of the sky quietly accentuates the subject’s presence. The lightness of the white dress and the contrast of small colors floating toward the sky guide the viewer’s gaze and imagination far beyond. The understated composition allows emotions and narratives to gently emerge, making negative space itself the central theme—an impressive feature of this work.

A diagonal shadow divides a white wall, with a tree adorned with red flowers standing vividly in the foreground. The double structure of a shadow—another form of negative space—overlapping within the vast white wall is highly original. Precisely because the negative space is achromatic, the color of the red flowers resonates like a cry, sharply capturing the beauty hidden in everyday alleyways.
In Closing
How did you find it?
The theme of ‘negative space’ offers us a perspective that speaks through subtraction. Because of the parts not depicted, the open spaces, and the quiet intervals, our gaze is sharpened, and the atmosphere and emotions within the photograph become more vivid. The works submitted this time convey a palpable sense of expansiveness, solitude, afterglow, tension, and release—their contrasts are clearly felt.
Discovering new pieces—talents yet unseen—is precisely the role we hope to fulfill through this project. We hope your expression will become the catalyst for reaching the hearts of many.
Look forward to our next theme.
