The tranquility of a city enveloped in winter light is striking in this image. The snow-capped mountains and the presence of the tower anchor the composition, while the figures in the foreground draw the landscape into the realm of someone's personal time. Within the expansive frame, the subtle presence of people lingers, evoking the lingering impression of observing a winter's day from afar.

The expression and movement of the figure standing in the snowy landscape are vividly conveyed. The gesture of holding the camera in the cold forest naturally brings out the joy and exhilaration of the moment. The contrast between the lingering autumn hues and the snow is also striking, capturing the transition of seasons with an honest sense of temperature.

Obihiro Racecourse is the only racecourse in the world where public Ban'ei horse racing is held.
Every morning, training begins before dawn. During winter training, the horses' sweat turns to steam, illuminated by the morning sun.
Since the pandemic, public viewing has been suspended, but I can still vividly recall the biting cold, the slowly rising sun and its light, and the sound of hooves striking the frozen ground.

The power of hooves pressing into the frozen earth is palpable even through the image. Rising steam and low light accentuate the tense atmosphere unique to a winter morning. By intentionally narrowing the focus to part of the subject, the viewer is invited to imagine the sounds, scents, and passage of time. This is a winter scene that lingers as an experience, transcending mere documentation.

The traces left in the vast expanse of white are eloquent. The overhead perspective emphasizes the 'act' more than the figure itself, imprinting the time spent interacting with the snow directly onto the image. The restrained color palette is effective, simultaneously evoking the stillness and playfulness of winter.

The rhythm created by the orderly trees and undulating snow resonates beautifully. The absence of footprints or human presence accentuates the sense of time and stillness in the winter forest. The elongated shadows cast by the low light add tension and depth, creating a structure that goes beyond a simple landscape. The more you gaze, the more the work invites a slow, steady breath.

Snow swirling across the frame envelops the night. The large bokeh in the foreground evokes the strength of the wind and the trembling of visibility, making you feel as if you are standing in the scene, not just viewing it. The lights glowing in the distant houses add a sense of life within the harsh winter, leaving a lasting impression of a scene where fantasy and reality quietly overlap.

The presence of people gathering in the night square fills the frame. The tree, sculpted by light, exudes the festive brilliance of a winter event, yet also contains a quiet sense of elation. The upward gazes and moments of pause accumulate as memories of winter. This work captures the vibrancy of the scene while delicately conveying the atmosphere of the place.

Snow beginning to fall in the night city quietly emerges under the lights. The blue and red reflections on the wet pavement create a unique tension in the cold air, revealing another face of the winter city. While no people are depicted, the empty space evokes the presence of those who have passed by and the time yet to come. You can almost hear footsteps echoing in the distance.

Winter brings out different emotions to come to life. It brings out the little joys of the season and it also brings us to a yielding point of the fast-paced era. Beyond the city lights, nature shows a sign of calmness to slow down and breathe.

The figure standing beyond the steam quietly conveys the weight of time spent enduring winter. The downcast expression is gentle, yet also suggests a sense of resolve in facing harsh conditions. The subdued color palette blurs the boundaries between body heat, water, and air, allowing the silence of the scene to seep in more deeply. This work expresses the essence of winter without words.

The sharpness of a winter morning is captured in each branch rimmed with white against the backlight. The composition, which faces the light head-on, conveys not only the cold but also the clarity of the air and the quiet beginning beyond. By bringing the subject close, the work captures a 'state' rather than a landscape. This is a piece that captures the moment when winter is at its most transparent, with a discerning gaze.

The delicate distance between two people facing each other on a snow-covered shore is depicted with great sensitivity. By intentionally blurring the focus, the emotions and atmosphere of the moment come to the fore, rather than facial expressions or outlines. The unspoken exchanges and subtle fluctuations born in the cold season resonate with the stillness of the water, leaving a lasting impression. The lack of a fixed gaze allows the viewer to touch the very memory of winter.

Beyond the window stretches a world of silver so profound it defies words. Viewing the landscape through the boundary of 'inside' and 'outside' that the window provides, the scene becomes more than just a snowy vista—it reflects time, distance, and even the spaces within our hearts. Step outside and the world is harsh; remain inside and it is beautiful. The gaze that pauses in this 'in-between' breathes a deep sense of calm into this work.
In Closing
What did you think?
The season of 'winter' may present a uniform landscape, but it also brings into sharp relief the differences in perspective and perception. The works submitted this time conveyed not only coldness and stillness, but also the presence of light, the warmth of daily life, and the unique 'winter time' each artist experienced.
Discovering yet-unknown talents (new pieces)—that is the very role we hope to fulfill through this project. We hope your creative expression will reach and inspire many more hearts.
Look forward to our next theme.
