This time, we asked cizucu creator Sui, who captures the culture and identity of various regions worldwide, to share her recommended photography spots in Taipei, Taiwan.

Sui values finding places that preserve the essence of a country or region, capturing the lives and cultures of the people through her lens. The spots she selected are filled with the unique charm of the area.

Why did you choose Taipei, Taiwan?

The reason I chose Taiwan this time is that each region has a different character, offering fresh discoveries every time I visit.

With a flight time of about 3 to 4 hours from Japan, Taiwan is easily accessible. You can encounter vibrant cityscapes, retro markets, and scenic natural landscapes. Walking around, you’ll feel a sense of nostalgia while also being delighted by the warmth of the people and new discoveries.

Through film photography, I want to introduce places in Taiwan where you can feel the “everyday warmth and scenery” and capture special moments during your travels.

1. Minsheng Community & Fujin Street

Located about a 10-minute walk from Songshan Airport, Fujin Street in Taipei’s Minsheng Community is a street that was developed from an area that once housed Taiwan Air Force residences.

The tree-lined avenue, with its large street trees, is now home to select shops, galleries, and cafes, offering a stylish and relaxed atmosphere.

It’s a spot where you can experience the latest Taiwanese culture while still feeling the remnants of a historic residential area.

Photography Tips

Walking along Fujin Street, you’ll notice the large street trees forming a green tunnel overhead. The sight of cars, bikes, and people passing under them creates a harmony between urban life and nature.

Rather than the flashiness of tourist spots, this place allows you to capture the calm atmosphere rooted in Taiwanese daily life. Using a compact film camera, I captured fleeting moments of everyday life while walking.

2. Longshan Temple

One of the must-visit temples in Taipei is Longshan Temple. In the surrounding area, you can capture scenes where the bustling atmosphere of tourism and faith intersects with the daily lives of locals.

For the elderly and residents, it’s a place of solace and an essential part of their daily lives.

Photography Tips

In this photo, I focused on the contrast between the vibrant tourist atmosphere and the everyday life of the town. By capturing the quiet moments and duality of the town from the perspective of its residents, I aimed to convey another side of the area.

3. Tainan

If you have time, I highly recommend visiting Tainan. Located about 1.5 hours from Taipei by high-speed rail, Tainan offers a different experience with its historic buildings and old streets, perfect for leisurely exploration.

Small markets and backstreet cafes allow you to experience the local lifestyle and enjoy street food.

Unlike the urban vibe of Taipei, here you can feel a slower pace of life.

Photography Tips

Anping Tree House is a popular spot in Tainan, where you can capture the unique scenery of trees entwined with old warehouses and light streaming through. By incorporating light and trees into the frame, you can convey the blend of history and nature, as well as the flow of time in Tainan.

4. Night Markets

No trip to Taiwan is complete without visiting a night market. Streets and squares are lined with food stalls, creating a lively space filled with locals and tourists alike.

The unique aromas from the stalls and the sight of families enjoying meals or children playing late into the night offer a glimpse into a side of daily life in Taiwan that’s different from Japan.

Photography Tips

Tainan’s night markets are famous for their Taiwanese-style steaks. The sight of people eating with knives and forks outside the stalls is unique and something you won’t often see in tourist spots.

In this photo, I focused on capturing the liveliness of the stalls and the local food culture, conveying the vibrant atmosphere of the night market.

What did you think? Be sure to visit the photography spots recommended by Sui and experience their beauty for yourself.
