This time, we asked cizucu creator Remm, who captures the essence of cultures and identities worldwide, to share recommended photography spots in Shikoku, Japan.

Remm values capturing the essence of a country or region by finding places where the lives and cultures of people remain deeply rooted. The photography spots chosen by Remm are all filled with the unique charm of their respective locations.

Why did you choose Shikoku?

Shikoku is accessible by car from my base in Hiroshima Prefecture and is a place where you can feel the beauty of nature.

The sea, rivers, and mountains harmonize perfectly, and every time I visit for photography, I fall more in love with it. I wanted more people to know about this region, which is why I chose it.

1. Shimanto River

Shimanto River, located in the western part of Kochi Prefecture, is the longest river in Shikoku. The river features unique bridges called "Chinkabashi" (submersible bridges).

Chinkabashi are designed to submerge during floods, with no railings to reduce construction costs and prevent damage from driftwood during high water levels. Surprisingly, despite their simplicity, these bridges see a fair amount of traffic from locals. Among the several Chinkabashi on Shimanto River, I visited "Katsuma Bridge (Katsuma Chinkabashi)" for photography.

Photography Tips

The river water is incredibly clear, and surrounded by forests, it shines a beautiful emerald green. This is a spot where you can capture the blue sky, green forests, and pristine river all in one frame.

I also tried some in-water photography. Be cautious, as the current can be strong in deeper areas. I recommend playing in the shallows for safety.

2. Kashiwajima

Located at the western tip of Kochi Prefecture, Kashiwajima is known for its incredibly clear waters, often referred to as "Kashiwajima Blue." If you're lucky, you might even encounter wild dolphins. I was fortunate to see a mother and baby dolphin.

The island's small port town has a nostalgic atmosphere, making it a very pleasant place to visit.

The combination of the clear blue sea and the port town's atmosphere makes this spot ideal not only for landscape photography but also for portraits.

3. Shikoku Karst

Next is Shikoku Karst, spanning Ehime and Kochi Prefectures. This karst plateau, at an altitude of 1,400 meters, features unique limestone formations shaped by rainwater erosion. From late April to early November, cows are grazed here, and you can observe them roaming freely across the vast land.

However, being a high-altitude mountain, the weather can change rapidly. When I visited, I was surprised to find myself surrounded by thick fog, which added a surreal charm to the place. I captured many photos of this unique atmosphere.

In the evening, the entire area is bathed in pink hues, creating a magical scene. It was a wonderful memory, and I hope to return to capture the landscape under a clear blue sky.

Photography Tips

Enjoy the wide-open skies and vast landscapes while experiencing the changing weather. This spot offers different expressions at morning, noon, and night, making it a place you'll never tire of visiting.

4. Chichibugahama

Located in Kagawa Prefecture, Chichibugahama is a shallow beach known for its stunning reflections in tide pools. The conditions for capturing these reflections depend on the tide, weather, and wind strength (strong winds can disturb the water surface). Compared to the other locations, this spot is slightly more challenging for photography.

When I took this photo, all the conditions happened to align perfectly, allowing me to capture an ideal shot.

Photography Tips

The key to photography here is capturing the reflections in the large tide pools on the shallow beach. The magic hour in the evening is particularly recommended.

In my photography, I always aim to capture the "natural" and "unpretentious" beauty of the moment. There are still many places in Shikoku I want to visit, and I hope to continue photographing Japan's nature and serene landscapes.
