Moored at the harbor, it no longer felt like a machine in motion, but something heavy and worn, finally allowed to rest. That was what I wanted to hold onto in this photograph. In black and white, the vessel loses the distraction of color and becomes almost entirely weight, surface, and shape. The dark hull, the ropes pulled tight, and the still water beside it all seem to carry the fatigue of a long day’s work. Across the water, the city remains lit and distant. But here, in the foreground, the ship feels quieter and older, as if the labor of the day still lingers in its body. Perhaps that is why the black and white version felt right to me. It does not show the ship at its most vivid. It shows it at its most exhausted. Unlike the black and white version, this scene feels warmer to me. The blue hull, the fading evening sky, and the lights reflecting on the water give the harbor a softer atmosphere, as if the long day has finally come to a calm end. That was what stayed with me. The ship is still heavy, worn, and marked by work, but in color it no longer feels only tired. It feels settled. The light from the harbor touches the water and spreads around the vessel, turning an ordinary working boat into something briefly gentle. Perhaps that is what made me photograph it again. After the labor of the day, what remained was not only fatigue, but also a quiet kind of warmth. Small working boats are tied together on the water, while bridges, apartments, and buildings rise behind them. The city seems to continue growing upward, but down here, close to the water, another part of the city moves at a very different pace. These boats are not here to be beautiful. Their hulls are worn, tires hang along their sides, and traces of years of work remain everywhere. Yet they are also part of the landscape I have known for a long time. In Busan, the sea is never simply scenery. Ships arrive and leave. Cargo moves. Engines run. People work somewhere beyond what most visitors notice. And beside all of that, the city continues with its apartments, roads, shops, and ordinary lives. That was what made me stop and take this photograph. For a moment, the old harbor and the modern city seemed to occupy the same frame — two different worlds that have always belonged to the same place. Perhaps someday these boats, buildings, or even this view will disappear. But that afternoon, they were still here.
