After entering the workforce, I got my own camera and connected with fellow photographers through social media.

The turning point came when I received a film camera from my supervisor at work.
A serendipitous mistake led to my first multiple exposure. I was deeply captivated by the unpredictable overlaps it created.

The act of shooting with intention, and the encounters with chance.
I continue to photograph while cherishing the moments that arise between these two.

This time, from Saturday, February 21, 2026, I will hold my first solo exhibition at gallery 2-16 in Okayama.

Namida Akizuki

Film-based multiple exposures | Humanity and nature |
Capturing tenderness and melancholy, and their lingering resonance in photographs

2022
Published the photobook "Awai — Two Worlds Overlapping" (Azusa Publishing), featuring essays and techniques on multiple exposure

2025
Invited as an instructor by Nakai Photo Studio to lead a multiple exposure workshop

cizucu: Namida Akizuki
Instagram: @akizuki_namida

Toward the Exhibition

While I have had opportunities to participate in group exhibitions, for a long time I felt that a solo exhibition was still "too soon" for me.

I first began to consider a solo show about five years ago.
As I visited various exhibitions, I searched for a form that felt true to myself. Yet, while the desire was there, I struggled to give concrete shape to my vision.

Then, I encountered a certain gallery.
"If I ever do it, it might be here."
The moment I thought that, the once-vague image of my exhibition suddenly became vivid in my mind.

When the gallery staff encouraged me, saying, "Please do it," I felt both joy and a wave of anxiety.

If I'm going to do it, I want it to succeed.
But my confidence wavered.
There were nights when I wanted to run away, wondering, "What if no one comes?"

Even so, I came to believe that the act of taking on a challenge has meaning in itself, regardless of success or outcome. With the support of those around me, I decided to move forward with this exhibition.

To be honest, preparations were extremely challenging.
From planning the exhibition layout to handling merchandise, once the vision for the space came together, I had to tackle everything at once, and ended up shouldering most of the work alone.

Sometimes, I even dreamed that I would never finish preparing.
Yet, amidst the anxiety, there is also a definite sense of joy.

What I Hope to Convey

The title of this solo exhibition was born from the very act of taking photographs.

The moment the shutter is released, that time has already ended.
But at the same time, it feels as if something new is beginning from that very instant.

Endings and beginnings are not separate things;
they always exist, overlapping with one another.

The "ending" in this exhibition is not about severing something.
It is something that quietly seeps into the presence of what comes next.

Nor do I wish to loudly proclaim a "beginning."
By the time you notice, it has already started.
It's a sensation akin to that.

This exhibition captures that state of transition.

When you stand before the photographs,
I would be delighted if, for someone, an ending or a beginning gently overlaps with their own experience.

Exhibition Information

"Endings and Beginnings"

Exhibition Dates: Saturday, February 21 – Tuesday, February 24, 2026
Hours: 10:00 – 19:00 (until 15:00 on the final day)

Venue: gallery 2-16
Address: 2-2-16 Tomita-cho, Kita-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture | Map
Access: Approximately 10 minutes on foot from the East Exit of JR Okayama Station
*Search for "zerodonuts" on the map

In February 2026, we will open the 'Prologue' in Tokyo,
and in April, the 'Main Exhibition' at the Aomori Museum of Art.

Photography and painting.
The time each of us has spent observing through our respective mediums will be presented side by side in the same space.

Mao Sakurada

Born in 1998 in Tairadate, Sotogahama Town, Aomori Prefecture.

Since childhood, Mao Sakurada has been sensitive to solitude, finding a sense of belonging in words and photography. In the 2020s, an era saturated with social media and moving images, she is a photographer who listens intently to the 'invisible.'

Her work consistently focuses on the intangible—presences, spaces, and silences that cannot be directly captured. Guided by the belief that photographing is a form of engagement and inseparable from living, she devotes equal energy to the moments when she is not photographing.

A gaze that contemplates absence. A conviction that what truly exists is found in what cannot be seen. At the same time, she deeply understands that photography cannot capture everything. This stance imbues her work with both gentleness and strength.

Rio Sakurada

Visual artist (painting, drawing)
Born in 2003 in Tairadate, Sotogahama Town, Aomori Prefecture.

Since childhood, painting has been her lifeblood. Drawing on personal memories and family narratives, she creates works primarily in oil pastel, oil paint, and pencil. This exhibition marks her first major presentation.

Exploring the 'presences' and 'traces' that emerge when engaging with family memories, she constructs quiet pictorial spaces through the layering of delicate lines. She seeks to express the accumulation of time—something words cannot fully convey—through the rhythm of her lines.

Toward the Exhibition

I still vividly remember the moment I received the call from my father telling me that our mother had collapsed.

From that instant,
“Whether she recovers or not, I will hold an exhibition for our mother.”
That was the resolve I made in my heart.

A few days after our mother passed away, I shared this intention with my sister,
and she replied, “I want to do it together.”
That was the beginning of this exhibition.

The subject matter was deeply personal.
We repeatedly paused to consider how much to offer as artwork,
constantly measuring that distance together.

There were days when emotions overwhelmed us,
and facing the process itself was a burden on both mind and body.

Even so, we kept asking ourselves, “What can we express now that only we, as sisters, can bring to form?”
It has been a year of slowly moving forward, re-examining these questions.

What We Wish to Convey

Memory, I believe, is far more ambiguous and ever-shifting than we imagine.

Precisely for that reason, rather than telling everything,
we wanted to leave space for each viewer to overlay their own memories.

This exhibition is not simply a place to look at “our mother.”
We hope it will be a space where you can quietly recall someone precious to you.

May the time spent before the works
offer a gentle opportunity to reconnect with yourself or with someone you care about.
With this wish, we open this exhibition.

Exhibition Information

Prologue | Tokyo

Exhibition Dates: February 21 (Sat) – February 23 (Mon, public holiday), 2026
Hours: 12:00 – 19:00
Venue: GALLERY IRO 1F
Address: 1-37-7-101 Kichijoji Honcho, Musashino-shi, Tokyo

Main Exhibition | Aomori

Exhibition Dates: April 18 (Sat) – April 19 (Sun), 2026
Hours: 10:00 – 17:00
Venue: Aomori Museum of Art, Community Gallery A & B
Address: 185 Yasuda Kondo, Aomori-shi, Aomori

Through social media, I have met and exchanged words with many people, and now, I am grateful to have a community of 55,000 followers.

Now, reflecting on my origins and seeking to move to the next stage, I will hold my first solo exhibition, “Last Letter.”
The exhibition will take place on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at BENE- in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. In addition to the photography exhibition, there will be a talk session and workshops, making this a ticketed event.

Rather than connecting through screens, I want to share the same space and time.
I hope to create an exhibition where I can hand over the feelings I have wanted to convey over these two years, directly and in person.

kani

I create gentle dark fantasy photography.

cizucu: kani
Instagram: @kaninobouken
Website: kaninobouken.jp

Toward the Exhibition

The concept for the “Last Letter” photography exhibition faced two major challenges.

This solo exhibition is not just about viewing photographs.
I wanted to create a space where people could gather, exchange words, and share their feelings. To achieve this, I needed a venue that could accommodate 100 people at once and host talks and workshops.
However, most conventional photography galleries could not meet these requirements. I spent months researching and contacting over 800 venues and galleries in Tokyo. After more than half a year, I finally found a place where I felt I could truly convey my intentions.

The other challenge was the cost.
For a creator whose activities began on social media, organizing an event of this scale is no small feat. I often worried about how to attract visitors and whether anyone would actually come.

Even so, the people I have met and my desire to share my voice gave me the courage to move forward.

At this moment, I felt, “Maybe now, people will listen.” That is why I decided to take this step.

Feelings I Wish to Convey

The reason I began photography and sharing my work is very simple.
“I want everyone to be able to smile at the end of their lives.”

I believe that one way to make this wish come true is to express your feelings to those who matter to you.

In this solo exhibition, “Last Letter,” I will explore my own worldview through two origins: the wedding ceremony as a space for expressing feelings, and the Great East Japan Earthquake, an event where many parted without being able to share their feelings.

For those who feel lonely somewhere in their hearts.
For those who want to say “thank you” or “I love you” but cannot find the words.
For those who feel they might regret things if nothing changes.

This exhibition is especially for people carrying such feelings.

I hope this place becomes an opportunity for someone to write their own “last letter.”
With that wish, I look forward to welcoming you.

Exhibition Information

“Last Letter”

Date & Time: Sunday, March 8, 2026, 14:00 – 16:30 (Doors open at 13:00)

Venue: BENE-
Address: 3F THE PLAYHOUSE, 5-8-5 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Access: 3-minute walk from Omotesando Station, Exit B1

Tickets: Please purchase tickets in advance via the official website.

This led to the idea for this exhibition.

Remi was introduced to me by Kota, and we discussed sound performance and technical aspects. When I shared the exhibition concept, Remi expressed her interest in creating works inspired by Sanjiroan, the venue. We then visited Sanjiroan together for a meeting.

Sanjiroan offers a view of the tea garden from its tea room. We spent about an hour observing the scenery and listening to the sounds with our eyes closed, aligning our senses. Both artists have unique perspectives that go beyond imagination, and I hope we can express Komatsu as a place from both 'inside' and 'outside' perspectives.

Our Message

This exhibition is a collaboration of three artists. Centered around the concept of 'A To Ka Ta,' each artist presents their unique expressions.

Remi Hayashi
This exhibition takes place in Sanjiroan, a historic building that has accumulated time over the years. In this era of rapidly changing information and technology, I sometimes lose track of when and where I am. That’s why exhibiting in a place layered with so much time, under the theme of 'A To Ka Ta,' allows me to reflect on how I live in the present. I hope visitors can also feel the contours of time.

Kota
The poems I’m exhibiting are mostly born from my daily life. I’d be happy if viewers resonate with them in some way. Exhibitions allow for immediate feedback from people, so I look forward to hearing their honest impressions.

Koyuki
My work is inspired by the collective behavior of crows, known as 'pre-roost gatherings,' which I’ve observed since childhood. I aim to capture invisible communication among living beings. I’m also excited to explore the unique communication that emerges in the space of Sanjiroan.

Additionally, Kota will perform sitar music and poetry readings spontaneously at the venue. We hope you’ll join us!

Event Details

3 Artists Exhibition at Sanjiroan 'A To Ka Ta'

Event Dates: Saturday, June 14, 2025 ~ Saturday, June 21, 2025 (Closed on Sundays)
Opening Hours: 10:00 AM ~ 6:00 PM (Closes at 7:00 PM on June 14)
Artist Attendance:
Remi Hayashi: June 14, 20, 21
Kota: June 14, 16, 17
Koyuki: Present every day
Venue: Sanjiroan, Wine and Local Sake Moritaka Inner Parlor
Address: 51 Yawata-cho, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture (20-minute walk or 10-minute bus ride from Komatsu Station)

After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Matsuyama University, he has been based in Tokyo as a photographer since 2022. His work explores the theme of "the scent of place and the link to memory," investigating the connection between the invisible scent (memory) of specific locations and his own recollections through his artwork. In this solo exhibition, I fuse multiple memories from the photo data left in my camera roll, connecting past and future from a new perspective.

My previous exhibition, "TOKYO UTOPIA," focused on reconstructing images of Tokyo. This time, rather than simply recreating illusions or imagined visions, I aim to evoke the intense moments of memory etched in our minds, giving them new form as they intersect with tangible spaces. I invite all visitors to experience firsthand the sensation of memory particles intertwining and reviving with place.

A New Urban Uncanny Woven by Photography and Digital Technology: 'TOKYO UTOPIA' | Photographer Kousuke Shimasaki | cizucu

This exhibition offers a fascinating exploration of the mysterious power of photography, rediscovered through digital techniques. Was there a particular reason or catalyst for the three of you deciding to hold this exhibition together?

Manju: Someone from U2 approached me and Utaumi about holding an exhibition, and at that moment, I thought it would be great to include Hirasue as well and do it as a trio. Hirasue and I form the photography unit 'calm,' and as I work with Utaumi as a photography partner, we naturally spent more time together as three. The idea came from wanting to leave something behind that represents the three of us.

Photography unit 'calm'

The three of us met in Okayama because of our shared love for the sea, and together we have accumulated many memories. As time passes and our daily thoughts gradually shift, when we sought a common form of expression, the phrase 'the distant blue sea' came to mind.

Hirasue: I've always liked the word 'distant,' and Utaumi added, 'The distance is blue, isn't it...?' Although it's rare for the three of us to gather, it's almost miraculous that we can hold an exhibition with a theme that naturally resonates with all of us. At the same time, it also feels like an extension of our everyday lives. I'm happy that we can do this together, and it brings a sense of calm.

Koki Manju (left) and Kento Hirasue (right) of the photography unit 'calm'

Messages We Wish to Convey

Q. Is there a message you would like to share with visitors to the exhibition?
Hirasue: I've come to think of blue as a color connected to memory. For example, youth. Blue is a color that evokes youthfulness and brings back memories of the past. But even within 'blue,' there are countless gradations. I would like to ask visitors, 'What shade of blue is yours?'

Utaumi: That's right. The overarching theme of this exhibition is to express the atmosphere that exists alongside daily life in Okayama and the Seto Inland Sea. Of course, I would be happy if visitors take their time to appreciate the photographs, but I also hope they can relax and enjoy the space and music with a drink in hand, experiencing the exhibition as an extension of daily life.

© Utaumi
Photograph of the Seto Inland Sea by Utaumi

Manju: I believe that the experience of viewing photographs outside of social media is extremely valuable in today's world. The photographs we take are intentionally subtle in color, focusing on the gentleness of everyday life rather than strong, striking images. That's why we chose to present our works in an exhibition space that feels close to daily living.

I think it's already significant that our generation, who came up through social media, is now holding a physical exhibition. As Utaumi mentioned, I hope people will drop by casually and spend a pleasant time here. The photographs on display, especially those from Onomichi and the Seto Inland Sea region, depict everyday scenes, but I hope that visitors will discover the beauty of reflecting on the ordinary.

Exhibition Overview

INFORMATION

Setouchi Living Photography Exhibition 'Distant Blue'
Exhibition Dates: Friday, December 1, 2023 ~ Monday, December 25, 2023
Opening Hours: 10:00 ~ 18:00
Artist Attendance: To be updated in each artist's profile highlights [Exhibition]
Instagram: @manju_koki @_kentohirasue @utau_mi
Venue: ONOMICHI U2
Address: 5-11 Nishigosho-cho, Onomichi, Hiroshima, ONOMICHI U2 | Map

His solo exhibition, Mitsuru Wakabayashi Photo Exhibition #01, will be held at GALLERY METABO in Kyoto from Sunday, December 3 to Saturday, December 9.

With a focus on materializing photography and creating lasting memories, this exhibition aims to leave a profound impression. Featuring previously unreleased works not shown on social media, the show is curated with a commitment to an immersive exhibition space that transcends conventional display methods and lingers in the memory.

Mitsuru Wakabayashi

Born in Kyoto, Mitsuru Wakabayashi transitioned from the apparel industry to photography after acquiring a camera while preparing for a working holiday in Toronto. He regularly shares his work on Instagram and now works with a diverse range of clients both in Japan and abroad, including commissions for Kifune Shrine, advertising, magazines, and social media platforms. His distinctive style captures the beauty of everyday life, often featuring people within broader scenic compositions, and he approaches his practice with an intent to create a photographic legacy.

Instagram: @mitsuru_wakabayashi
Website: Mitsuru Wakabayashi

Toward the Solo Exhibition

In preparing for this solo exhibition, my aim is to create a memorable and unforgettable experience for visitors. While the conventional image of a photography exhibition is framed prints on display, I sought a more resonant approach, inspired by conversations with colleagues, to offer a unique and lasting experience. The exhibition will utilize two spaces, with one gallery room featuring an unprecedented display. To enhance the immersive quality, music for the space was composed by Ayami Yasai (@bud_envi). I hope that everyone who visits will discover a new perspective on the joy of photography.

Message to Visitors

During the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022, I kept a photographic diary for two years, walking around my neighborhood daily. This period made me acutely aware of the beauty and transience of everyday life, and led me to reconsider the documentary nature of photography, fundamentally changing my relationship with the medium.

By not only sharing photographs on social media but also printing and exhibiting them, I hope visitors can more deeply engage with the intention and care behind each work. I will be exhibiting pieces that I have revisited and printed many times, inviting viewers to experience them as tangible objects. If you have time, I would be delighted if you could enjoy the exhibition at your leisure, perhaps with a coffee or a glass of wine in hand.

Exhibition Overview

Mitsuru Wakabayashi Photo Exhibition #01

Dates: Sunday, December 3 – Saturday, December 9
Hours: 11:00 – 18:00
Venue: GALLERY METABO
Address: 18 Metabo Okazaki, Shogoin Sannocho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto | Map

The Okazaki area, where the exhibition is held, is especially tranquil in the afternoon, making it an ideal place to relax and unwind. Among the world's great metropolises, Tokyo stands out for its unique blend of bustle and tranquility. The beauty of Tokyo, the intricate system of the city, and the relationship between human presence and urban dissonance—these are the themes explored by photographer Kousuke Shimasaki. His solo exhibition, 'TOKYO UTOPIA,' which delves into the uncanny urban images woven by photography and digital technology, will be held at Auba Jaconelli in Asakusa, Taito Ward, from Saturday, July 22 to Sunday, July 30.
Be sure to also read our interview with Shimasaki.

Sensing Nature, Weaving Memories | 10 Questions for Kousuke Shimasaki | ISSUE #5 | cizucu

Kousuke Shimasaki

Kousuke Shimasaki / With the theme of 'the connection between the scent of a place and memory,' he poetically expresses through photography the invisible scents and emotions he experiences in specific locations. At the core of his practice is a reverence for nature, cultivated in his hometown, which informs his daily work—particularly his attention to color, light, and the contrast of shadows.

cizucu: Shimakou
Instagram: kosukeshimasaki
Website: Kousuke Shimasaki

Toward the Solo Exhibition

I have long discussed the idea of holding a solo exhibition with the owner of Auba Jaconelli, a select apparel shop in Asakusabashi with whom I regularly collaborate on product photography. Thanks to this connection, we were able to move forward with the exhibition this July.

With only a few days left until the opening, I am immersed in a whirlwind of preparations—arranging frames, printing, and finalizing the works. I am confident this solo exhibition will be an enjoyable experience for all visitors!

Message I Wish to Convey

This body of work is inspired by an imaginary Tokyo landscape that appeared to me in a dream two years ago.
I hope you will experience the uncanny new vision of the city that emerges from the fusion of contemporary digital technology and traditional photographic practice.

Exhibition Overview

TOKYO UTOPIA

Exhibition Dates: Saturday, July 22 – Sunday, July 30
Artist in Gallery: Saturday, July 22 & Sunday, July 23, 13:00 – 19:00
Closed: Wednesdays and Thursdays
Venue: Auba Jaconelli
Address: 3-4-8 Asakusabashi, Taito-ku, Tokyo 1F | Map

The rich color palette and distinctive noise in Shimasaki's photographs create a dreamlike world that paradoxically overflows with reality.
