Taken at Grand Front Osaka, shortly after I arrived in Japan on a working holiday. At the time, everything around me still felt unfamiliar, and I found myself using light to make sense of that feeling. I am less interested in recording a scene exactly as it appears than in translating what it feels like to stand inside it. By refracting and bending light with optical filters, an ordinary public space can become something more uncertain: part memory, part emotion. These photographs often contain feelings that I cannot fully put into words. That is why I make them: not to explain the moment, but to preserve them before they disappear.
